What’s better – Traditional or Electronic Toys?
Our little ones have so many play choices! You may feel pressured into thinking you MUST invest in the latest interactive electronic toys (tablets with games, a toy bear that can read a story, etc) to help aid their growth and development…
…but did you know there’s no evidence to support that?😲
Last January, the American Academy of Pediatrics published an article titled “Selecting Appropriate Toys for Young Children in the Digital Era” 📖 They highlighted that “although it has been suggested that there may be learning benefits in association with interactive media, there is presently NO evidence to suggest that possible benefits of interactive media match those of active, creative, hands-on, and pretend play with more traditional toys. In particular, children need to use their hands to explore and manipulate to strengthen those areas in the brain associated with spatial and mathematical learning. Recent investigations have revealed that during children’s play with electronic toys, there were fewer adult words, fewer conversational turns, fewer parental responses, and fewer productions of content-specific words than during play with traditional toys or books.”
In other words – get back to basics – traditional toys like blocks, trains, dolls, and puzzles provide more learning benefits than the latest ‘educational’ electronic games.
Power down those tablets and settle onto the floor for some good old fashioned FUN with your little ones.
