Today is #tuesdaysarefortoys and over the last few weeks we’ve worked our way up to the 3-6 year old stage👧🧒
You may have noticed that your preschooler has a much longer attention span now – 3 year old’s certainly can talk a lot and ask a lot of questions! They like to experiment with things and like to play with their friends – they can take turns and are capable of sharing quite well.
Good toys for the development of 3- to 6-year-olds are: ✔️Problem solvers: puzzles (with 12 to 20+ pieces), blocks that snap together, any collections of objects to sort by length, width, height, shape, colour, quantity or other features.
✔️Let’s pretend and build: collections of blocks for building more complex structures, transport toys, construction sets, child-sized furniture, play food, dress-up clothes, dolls and accessories, puppets and sand and water play.
✔️Get creative: crayons, markers, paintbrushes and fingerpaints and papers, preschooler-sized scissors, chalkboard and chalks, modelling clay, playdough and modelling tools, instruments such as keyboards, xylophones, maracas, and tambourines.
✔️Story time: age appropriate picture books which have more words and more detailed pictures than toddler books.
✔️Gross motor skills development: balls for kicking and throwing/catching, ride-on equipment including tricycles, tunnels, wagons and wheelbarrows, plastic bats and balls, plastic bowling pins, targets and things to throw at them, and a workbench with tools.
✔️Tech: computer games that are interactive (the child can do something) and that children can understand (the software uses graphics and spoken instruction), mean that children can control the pace and path, and explore a variety of concepts on several levels.
Remember that all children progress at their own rate, some a little earlier, some later. If for any reason you have concerns about your child’s development (ie developmental delay; not reaching milestones, late rolling, sitting or walking), we can help! If you’re in the London area or Surrey and Essex borders, get in touch for a chat. Even if you’re elsewhere in the world, message us and we’ll do our best to advise you how to move forward✨
