Thursday 11th June:
You can see imagination blossoming. It is nourished by wonderful ideas provided through shared stories, personal reading and discussion and it is strengthened in practice. Play is imagination in action. Sometimes it is untidy, messy even, it may seem inconvenient and it often takes over more than half of the space in our living room – but it is relaxing, meaningful, fulfilling, educative and absolutely essential for the emotional well being and intellectual growth of a child. This is part of a play world created by the young one that has been a feature of our main living area for days now, a mixture of natural materials, fabrics and purchased toys. Oh the stories she has told in this world! It seems that many children in our modern age stop playing too soon – a result of the various constraints of school and extra-curricular activities, modern societal expectations, parental schedules, electronic screens – so I am content that home educating my daughter ensures there is room in our lives for play and she certainly plays! Unadulterated, imaginative, immersive, joyful, free play.
